Emotional Freedom Technique

Finding Emotional Peace: Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT or Tapping) for Stoma Care, Palliative Support & End-of-Life Journeys

What is EFT? A Gentle Path to Balance

EFT is a modern therapeutic approach rooted in the same ancient energy principles as acupuncture. Instead of needles, EFT uses gentle fingertip tapping on specific meridian points (the same energy channels described in traditional Chinese medicine) while focusing on emotional or physical concerns.

  • The Core Idea: Just as acupuncture seeks to balance the flow of Qi (vital energy) to promote physical and emotional harmony, EFT works to release emotional blockages stored within this energy system. Emotional distress, trauma, or physical symptoms like pain or nausea can disrupt this flow, contributing to feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, or disconnection.

  • How it Works: By tapping on key points (primarily on the face, upper body, and hands) and verbally acknowledging the specific issue (e.g., "Even though I feel anxious about my stoma bag changing, I deeply and completely accept myself"), EFT helps to calm the nervous system, reduce the intensity of difficult emotions, and restore a sense of energetic balance. It cultivates that same feeling of being "in touch with ourselves and our surroundings" that balanced Qi promotes.

  • Why EFT for These Challenges? EFT is uniquely suited because it is:

    • Non-invasive and Gentle: No needles, no physical manipulation. Perfect for sensitive skin, post-surgical recovery, or times of physical frailty.

    • Empowering: Gives you a simple tool you can learn to use yourself for immediate relief.

    • Addresses the Whole Person: Seamlessly integrates emotional distress (fear, grief, anger, body image issues) with physical symptoms (pain, nausea, discomfort, fatigue).

    • Adaptable: Can be done seated, lying down, or even in a hospital bed or hospice room.

EFT for Specific Journeys

For Those Living with a Stoma

Life with a stoma involves significant adjustment. EFT can provide vital support for:

  • Managing Anxiety & Fear: Tapping can reduce anxiety about leakage, odour, bag changes, social situations, or intimacy.

  • Improving Body Image & Acceptance: Address feelings of loss, altered body image, and frustration, fostering greater self-acceptance and confidence.

  • Reducing Physical Discomfort: Help alleviate skin irritation, phantom rectal pain, or general discomfort associated with the stoma.

  • Processing Emotional Impact: Release grief related to the loss of previous bodily function or the trauma of surgery.

  • Building Resilience: Enhance coping skills for the daily practicalities and emotional ups and downs of stoma care.

For Individuals in Palliative Care

Palliative care focuses on quality of life. EFT is a valuable complementary tool to:

  • Alleviating Anxiety & Depression: Reduce fear about the future, treatment side effects, or declining health. Lift feelings of sadness or hopelessness.

  • Managing Symptoms: Help reduce the perception of pain, nausea, breathlessness, and fatigue, promoting greater comfort.

  • Improving Sleep: Calm a racing mind and physical restlessness to support better rest.

  • Enhancing Communication & Relationships: Process complex emotions, making it easier to communicate needs and wishes with loved ones and caregivers.

  • Finding Moments of Peace: Create space for acceptance, gratitude, and connection amidst challenging circumstances.

For End-of-Life Support

In the profound journey towards life's end, EFT offers compassionate support for:

  • Easing Existential Anxiety & Fear: Address deep fears about dying, the unknown, or leaving loved ones, fostering a sense of peace and acceptance.

  • Processing Unresolved Emotions: Gently release regrets, unfinished business, or long-held grief, allowing for emotional resolution.

  • Reducing Physical Distress: Help manage pain, agitation, nausea, and breathlessness, contributing to physical comfort and dignity.

  • Supporting Family & Caregivers: EFT can also be taught to family members to help them manage their own anticipatory grief, stress, and anxiety, enabling them to be more present.

  • Promoting Connection & Meaning: Facilitate moments of reflection, connection with loved ones, and a sense of inner peace and completion.

What to Expect During an EFT Session at Soul Harbor Therapies
  • Your First Session: Your first session will be slightly longer (1.5 hours) and it is a time for building trust and understanding. Your EFT practitioner will create a safe, compassionate space. They will listen deeply to your unique story, concerns, and goals – whether it's stoma-related anxiety, palliative care symptoms, or end-of-life fears. There's no need for physical examination like pulse or tongue diagnosis. The focus is entirely on your emotional and physical experience in the present moment.

  • The Tapping Process: Your practitioner will guide you to gently tap with your fingertips on specific acupressure points while you repeat phrases that acknowledge your specific issue. This process is calming and often brings rapid relief. You remain fully clothed and seated or lying comfortably.

  • A Collaborative Approach: You are always in control. You choose the focus words and the pace. The practitioner guides the technique, but you direct the content. Sessions are tailored to your energy levels and needs on any given day.

  • Learning Self-Help: A core goal is to teach you the basics of EFT so you can use it independently between sessions for immediate relief whenever you need it.

  • Integration: I may integrate other therapies as part of your sessions such as Clinical Hypnotherapy and Reiki.

  • After the Session: You will need access to fresh water to drink so that you can replenish and recharge after the session.

How Often Might I Need EFT?

This is highly individual and depends entirely on your needs and goals:

  • Acute Distress (e.g., sudden anxiety, procedure fear): Even a single session can provide relief. A few close sessions might be beneficial.

  • Ongoing Support (e.g., stoma adjustment, palliative symptom management): Weekly or bi-weekly sessions for several weeks can build resilience and provide consistent support.

  • End-of-Life Care: Frequency is guided by your comfort and wishes. Sessions might be more frequent initially to establish coping tools, then become more focused on specific moments of distress or peace-making as needed. Sessions can be shorter and more frequent, or longer and less frequent, adapting to your energy.

  • Empowerment Focus: Many clients find that after a few sessions learning the technique, they can effectively manage much of their day-to-day emotional distress independently, using practitioner sessions for deeper work or particularly challenging times.
